In your face wordplay is a straightforward way to sum up Jade Rude’s latest installation. As illuminated letters overlap to spell out H-O-L-D-M-E, the intimate gallery space sets out to envelop the viewer. The boldness of the piece screams out an order very much in contrast with its desire, making the command all the more plaintive. The Toronto-based artist and designer known for her clever use of language, symbols and reflection is adept at creating works that incorporate trompe l’oeil and optical illusions.
